Temperature is the most important factor in the location equation. The warmest part of your refrigerator is nearest the door and the coolest area is in the back. As a quick reference, store these in the warmest section of your refrigerator around 40° to 45° F:
- Cucumbers
- Eggplant
- Peppers
- Avocados
- Red potatoes
These will fare the best in the midsection of your refrigerator around 35° to 39° F:
- Green onions
- Squash
- Sprouts
- Herbs
These go in the back of your refrigerator. These items need to be stored at the coolest temperature around 33°-35° F:
- Broccoli
- Cabbage
- Apples
- Celery
- Lettuce
- Asparagus
And, some items should be stored in the coolest section of your kitchen, not in the refrigerator at all! Temperatures ranging from 50°-55°F:
- Bananas
- Potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Onions
You can also use Storage Food Containers and Food Boxes to keep produce fresh for longer periods of time (both cut and uncut)
